Producer Martin Melcher, Doris Day's late husband, had previously guided her career as the prototype for the all-American girl-next-door. This film was his attempt to provide her with the vehicle to play a more realistic "working mum" character, while still maintaining her wholesome screen image. Doris Day and Brian Keith have a field day in this clever, up-beat romantic tale of love, marriage, kids and coping. Abby (Day) is a self-sufficient widow with three rambunctious sons. Jake (Keith) is the mild-mannered father of a stubborn 18-year-old daughter. Put them all together and you've got one outrageous family!
