Crookneck houses heavyweights such as Mnemonic Ascent, DJ Ransom, Raph, Lazy Grey, Celsius, Party Starters (Mnemonic Ascent and Koolism), DJ J-Red and F+D, with a strong release schedule for 2004/05.
Representing fifteen years since the first Australian hip hop vinyl release, ‘15 Oz Vinyl ‘ features thirty of the most influential and interesting Australian hip hop tracks since 1988. DJ Ransom has compiled a compilation which both reflects where Australian hip hop’s roots lie and how far the genre has come. Ransom’s mixing is aided by the turntablism of Australian DJ battle champion J-Red, who provides the scratching commentary to the CD.
15 oz. Vinyl is a testament to the fact that Australian hip hop has existed and flourished as a DIY culture and musical form for the last fifteen years. Includes highly influential releases by pioneers the AKA Brothers, Prowla , Trem (Lyrical Commission) , Koolism, Sound Unlimited Posse, Def Wish Cast & Hilltop Hoods Representing more recent releases include Hyjak’s “Let you know”, Mass MC’s “BBQ Song” and Downsyde’s “El Questro”.
15 oz. Vinyl acknowledges womens contribution to Australian hip hop. Sydney’s Spice is featured along with Melbourne’s influential MC Que & Ebony Williams .
Rappers aside, it is interesting to note the significance of hip hop producers. Jase (integral member of breaks trio NuBreed) boasts production credits of five of the songs featured on 15 oz. Vinyl. Groove Terminator’s early production on Finger Lickin Good’s ‘Dust off the mic” also gives the listener a little piece of Australian hip hop trivia.
