Laden with gimmicks, exotic touches, and melodramatic motifs, productions like 1951's JALOUSIE and 1952'S ROCK OF GIBRALTAR are harnessed by Laine's dominant vocal sweep. He is much more than just a shouter, and his sensitive and gentle side manifests itself on the emotionally moving "Answer Me," and the gospel-like reverence of "I Believe," both from 1953. The spectacular "Cool Water" is totally animated by Laine's restless and free-roaming voice.
