Description:
This opera based on Tennessee Williams' great play was commissioned by Lofti Mansouri for the San Francisco Opera and written by Andr‚ Previn to feature the voice of Ren‚e Fleming in the pivotal role of Blanche. In the play, Blanche has several extended monologues, which are aria-like in effect. These have been transformed in the opera into arias for Blanche, pretty much the only character who has them. For the most part, Previn has opted for the kind of arioso/recitative first used by Debussy and Mussorgsky, with much of the drama taking place in the orchestra. Previn's orchestral writing is masterly, effectively setting the scene in just a few bars. He has done a fine job with his text-heavy libretto which, naturally, keeps as much of Williams' luminous writing as possible.

The recording is taken from the first run of performances in San Francisco with the cast Previn wrote for including the eve- lovely Ren‚e Fleming as his affecting Blanche. The performance should be considered definitive.
