Description:
RED is the last instalment in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy. In Red a fashion model, played by Irene Jacob, named Valentine accidentally runs over a dog, she returns the injured animal to its indifferent owner, a world weary former judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, who likes to listen in on his neighbours phone conversations.
Out of this chance encounter Valentine see's the world that exist's out side that which she knows and takes a certain interest in the existence of people with whom she would not necessarily concern herself with. She realises that her own troubles of a runaway brother, a dysfunctional family and a distant lover are rather mundane problems.
An accompanying story-line involves another couple, a young man in training to be a judge and his unfaithful girlfriend. As both stories unfold, it becomes increasingly evident that they are linked on a far deeper level. This elaborate coda, in which life is seen as a set of preordained events and consequences, culminates in a devastating denouement in which all previous characters from Kieslowski's trilogy are ironically united in a tragedy. It is a truly haunting end to the director's oeuvre.
