Description:
In early 1946, Fox's Music Director, Alfred Newman, approached Bernard Herrmann to compose the score for this film, based on the true-life story of Anna Leonowens, who worked as a governess to the children of Siam's King Mongkut in order to support herself and two children (which was chronicled in two books by Leonowens - "The English Governess at the Siamese Court" (1870) and "The Romance of the Harem" (1872), later condensed by American writer Margaret Landon, published in 1944). Many films, broadway shows and television productions have retold the story, but this film with Herrmann's great score is outstanding. By this time, Herrmann had only written five film scores (the acclaimed Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Jane Eyre, the moody thriller Hangover Square with its stunning piano concerto, and let's not forget All that Money Can Buy, for which our composer won the Academy Award). Herrmann's music took on a change of direction for Anna, relying on authentic Siamese scales and melodic fragments to capture the sound of Oriental music with orchestra instruments. Much of the score revolves around the 12-note "Siam Theme," introduced in the opening, giving ritualistic majesty and mystery to Siam. Lightening the mood is Herrmann's brighter, bouncier themes for the children of Siam ("The Children"). The fifty-one tracks on the album (including four bonus tracks), are exciting and richly orchestrated cues by the "Master of Drama," which keep the mood/theme of this far-off, strange land known as Siam. Bernard Herrmann's place in film music is already secure and on the highest plain, but this first release of his complete original score renews our appreciation for his genius and the brilliant movie-music storyteller he was!
