Description:
Here is yet another reissue of Dr. John material from the late '60s and early '70s, some of it apocryphal in origin, some of it showing up on his early recordings. This batch, from the Master Classics label, has a few things going for it over the other various versions of the music circulating out there. For starters, it has liner notes approaching some sense of coherence. Nothing exhaustive, mind you, or even lengthy, but it's a bio essay that actually addresses some of the tracks. Next, the package is very nice looking in its gold embossed digipack. And there are a full 20 cuts here -- most collections of this material only feature ten to 12. Finally, and most important, is the sound. These cuts have all been digitally remastered and sound better than ever. Some of the true classics here -- in terms of well-known tunes -- are "Mama Roux," "Wash Mama Wash," "Tipitina," and "What Comes Around (Goes Around)." Less well known but no less engaging are "Woman Is the Root of All Evil," Roy Byrd's "Bald Head," "Just Like a Mirror," and "Bring Your Love." For the price, this comp can't be beat. Thom Jurek.
