Description:
‘Berlin’ stands on its own as a deft re-imagining of one of the 20th century's most powerful works. Special guest performers include Antony (Antony & The Johnsons), Sharon Jones (Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings), a seven piece orchestra (including Eyvind Kang and Jane Scarpantoni) and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Lou Reed was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a founding member of The Velvet Underground in 1996. The band gained little mainstream attention during their career, but in hindsight became one of the most influential of their era. Reed began a long and eclectic solo career in 1971, releasing ‘Berlin’ in 1973, as a follow up to his biggest commercial album ‘Transformer’.
Musically, the ‘Berlin’ album differs greatly from the bulk of Reed's work, due to the use of heavy orchestral arrangements, horns, and top session musicians. Over three decades later, Lou performed the entire album live for the first time ever in 2006 (at Brooklyn’s St. Ann's Warehouse) and then again in 2007. It was instantly greeted by music and film critics as an absolute masterpiece. The live album is produced by Bob Ezrin (who produced the studio album of ‘Berlin’ as well as massive albums for Pink Floyd & Alice Cooper) and Hal Wilner (the man behind innumerable great conceptual recordings that have seen him work with artists such as Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull & Elvis Costello). The band also features Lou’s long-time musical associates Fernando Saunders and Rob Wassermann and the remarkable Detroit guitarist Steve Hunter, who played on the original ‘Berlin’ recording as well as Lou’s ‘Rock & Roll Animal’ album from the 70s. The album includes three additional songs from the shows, two from the Velvet Underground’s catalogue and one from Lou’s solo career.
