As one of the leading lights of the early 90s IDM (intelligent dance music) movement, the trio calling themselves The Black Dog were responsible for some of the moments in the then-still-being-defined idiom of contemporary electronic music. And whether the concept of 'intelligent' dance music is itself an oxymoron and endlessly debated, it's unquestionably the consensus that the dark hounds of Warp-style beatmusic were some of the genre's leaders. This is music in love with 'revisionist' technology-sweeping synth filters, analog blips and bleeps, complex rhythm programming and, perhaps most importantly, endearing near-melodies. Sounds chirrup, chortle, chime, even caress the ear in a xenon heathaze of bubbling beatboxes and virtual landscapes. The triad that was the Dog would later split, with two-thirds becoming the equally enigmatic Plaid, but this studio-constructed pooch BYTES his way right into electronica's history books.
