Description:
Lemonheads: Evan Dando, Ben Deily, Jesse Peretz, Doug Trachten.
1988's CREATOR, the Lemonheads' second album, moves away from the pop-punk of its predecessor, 1987's HATE YOUR FRIENDS, into the idiosyncratic mix of pure pop, punk roots, and oddball experiments that were to characterize the band's next several offerings. Folks who only know the Lemonheads' later, poppier output are sometimes surprised to discover that for their first three albums, Evan Dando was the band's co-leader, writing only half of the songs, with the more punk-oriented Ben Deily taking the other half.
Ironically, here Deily's songs, from the Replacements-like "Falling" and "Live Without," to the tender acoustic "Postcard," and the Black Sabbath-influenced opener "Burying Ground," are better than Dando's. "Two Weeks in Another Town" and "Clang Bang Clang"--later remade on LOVEY as "Left For Dead"--are Dando's highlights. The CD also includes a Dutch radio session featuring a sloppy take on Suzanne Vega's "Luka," and an odd Dando interview.
