Description:
Personnel includes: Richard Thompson, Jim Keltner, Mickey Curry, Jerry Scheff.
Though it's one of his least-acclaimed albums, DARING ADVENTURES is one of Richard Thompson's most powerful and consistent efforts. It finds him at the beginning of his Mitchell Froom-produced period, but Froom's keyboards and trademark style had not yet pulled Thompson fully away from his vintage Richard & Linda/SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS approach. The songs are among Thompson's strongest; as ever, he looks askance at romance in a manner both wry ("Valerie," "Baby Talk") and mournful ("Missie How You Let Me Down," "Jennie"). He's equally comfortable name-checking Scritti Politti and dedicating a song to pre-WWII crooner Al Bowlly, and delving into both blazing guitar leads and delicate acoustic folk settings. Buoyed by a stellar rhythm section including bassist Jerry Scheff and drummer Jim Keltner, Thompson doesn't put a foot wrong throughout DARING ADVENTURES.
