Punk was a direct and opposite reaction to Progressive Rock and its sprawling excesses. Instead of the veritable Rock symphonies of pretension and musical frippery drawn out over twenty minutes or more, Punk created sub-three minute gobs of snot which meant anyone who could pick up a guitar could get noticed. So what did NOFX go and do? Not afraid of doing the unexpected, NOFX went and created `The Decline', an 18-minute Prog-Punk behemoth. NOFX has always been extremely catchy, but this takes things a step further by blending together every kind of punk-related music you can think of into 18 minutes of very creative melody. This would be enough to make the song great. But Fat Mike and the gang weren't done. The lyrics of this song (and I really don't feel like I'm exaggerating AT ALL) are as good or better than any song I have ever heard. Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, you take your pick: The Decline's lyrics dwarf them. If you read the lyrics they really are a poem, an excellent one at that.
