Description:
This single-CD sampler of Cannonball Adderley's career points out how difficult it is to get all of his accomplishments on one disc. Drawing from the Emarcy, Blue Note, and Capitol catalog (with one number leased from World Pacific), the ten songs are programmed in chronological order. There are five boppish selections from 1957-1959, including meetings with Miles Davis ("One for Daddy-O"), the Gil Evans Orchestra (a classic rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "King Porter Stomp"), and John Coltrane (a fiery and very memorable version of "Limehouse Blues"). Two selections from 1960-1962 ("Sack o' Woe" and "Jive Samba") feature Adderley's quintet/sextet at their prime. The final three numbers are from Adderley's lazier soul jazz/funk period on Capitol, including his hit "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Although this disc tries its best, it only hints at the many treasures to be found in Cannonball Adderley's discography. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG
