A blatant statement about the U.S. war in Iraq, EARLY 21ST CENTURY BLUES finds Canada's Cowboy Junkies playing to the strengths that have served them well since the days of their classic TRINITY SESSIONS, by dealing mainly in interpretations of outside material. Here they tackle a load of tunes that might seem unlikely out of context: two latter-day Springsteen songs, an early George Harrison solo cut, a couple of traditional numbers, and even a take on U2's "One." All these are given the trademark Junkies treatment, with gentle folk-rock jangle supporting Margo Timmins's haunting, ethereal vocals, and they bear that much more impact for the social import of their surroundings.
