Description:
In case you changed channels after the perma-smile glee of Frente!'s Accidentally Kelly Street, lead singer Angie Hart is still producing whimsical pop music albeit with a dreamier melancholic tone.
Hart's second solo album since disbanding Splendid, her duo with ex-husband Jesse Tobias, is a stripped-back and airy acoustic affair produced by Shane Nicholson, Kasey Chambers' earthy-tone loving husband. To borrow some clichéd Masterchef parlance, Nicholson doesn't crowd this album with fussy garnish or cheap filler; rather he lets one key quality ingredient shine through Hart's voice.
Track by track her fluffy, light, broad Australian drawl is placed high in the mix so that the listener has no choice but to focus on the now Melbourne-based songwriter's slowly unfolding lyrics. Never one to hide behind her songs, diary-entry tracks like Glitter discuss Hart's fears for a relationship when the initial, exciting sheen rubs off.
Where Accidentally Kelly Street was bedroom pop for jumping on the bed, this, like Frente!'s darker moments, is delicate but intense balladry (Bonnie Prince Billy even makes a guest appearance) from a sincere songwriter still willing to share the personal.
