Description:
Picking up where the first, masterfully directed film left off, Election 2 is an equally brutal look into the workings of one of the world's most secretive organisations, the Hong Kong Triads. Blending equal amounts of politics and violence, director Johnny To has depicted one of the most important and dangerous ceremonies in Triad law in a coldly accurate and bloody manner. Equal parts political thriller and Asian gangster flick, Election 2 manages to be confronting without being excessive. The film follows the last election winner, Lok, in his bid for a tradition breaking second term. Jimmy is his biggest rival, but he only wants the position for entrepreneurial purposes, and wishes to avoid violence. This view is highly irregular in the generally brutal underground way of life, but Jimmy is determined to win and further his own purposes. The pair stop at nothing to intimidate each other and win the ultimate prize, with bloody battles in the street, beatings and torture becoming the norm as Triads become divided between the competing sects. This is politics at its bloodiest, and To has captured it magnificently. A well-paced extension to the first film, but possessing enough flair to stand alone, Election 2 is set to follow the path paved by Election and go even further, taking the concepts of violence, revenge and loyalty to their absolute extremes
