Gotye is the music-making mantle of Wally De Backer, songwriter, producer and all-round one-man band. A few years ago he created an album that became something of an underground classic. That record, Like Drawing Blood, was voted Triple J listeners' favourite album of 2006, and iTunes UK's Album Of The Year in 2008. In 2007 Gotye won the ARIA Award as Australia's Best Male Artist and his audiovisually ambitious tour with a mini orchestra attracted huge crowds and critical raves. In early 2011 there will finally be a new Gotye album. 'Eyes Wide Open' is the first song lifted from that collection. Written, performed, recorded and produced almost entirely by Gotye, it fuses bass tones sampled from the Winton Musical Fence in outback Queensland with sounds created in the home studio built by his father in a large barn on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Add to this languid pedal steel guitar plus whale-like cello moans, and Eyes Wide Open is a post-apocalyptic sonic landscape unlike anything else Gotye has constructed.
