Description:
It's tempting to try to classify Pelican, but their music defies any easy definitions. While they certainly use volume and crushing heaviness as a weapon, they are equally adept at quiet moments of meditation. The different moods and textures the band explored on their full-length debut, AUSTRALASIA, are expanded on in even more dramatic fashion on the follow-up, THE FIRE IN OUR THROATS WILL BECKON THE THAW. The album's title appropriately describes the gradual build in tension as each song unfolds, with minimal instrumentation giving way to epic cascading riffs that build upon one another in imposing fashion. Elsewhere, as on "Track 4," acoustic guitars introduce another variable in the equation, exhibiting further growth away from the band's metallic beginnings. The spine-tingling prettiness of "Aurora Borealis" and "Autumn into Summer" are also far from thrash, but when everything comes to a head, as on "March to the Sea," you are reminded of Pelican's headbanging roots.
