Singer/guitarist Jeremy Enigk, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer Will Goldsmith are no strangers to the underground rock scene. Well-known and seasoned Seattle musicians, the band members' legacies include Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters (bassist Nate still plays with The Foos). This is their debut album as The Fire Theft.
As with SDRE, the Fire Theft's power is largely derived from frontman Jeremy Enigk and his pitch-perfect, high register vocals. The tracks range from piano-dominated number "Heaven" to cathartic, major-key guitar rock of "It's Over" to the electric guitar crunch and gentle, synthesizer-led verses of "Sinatra." Keyboards (provided by Nick Macri in the live line-up) are prominent on the emphatic "Chain" and the slow-building "Oceans Apart." Second guitarist Bill Dolan (5ive Style, Heroic Doses) is another strong addition to the live lineup.
How The Fire Theft came to be:
Formed in 1992, Sunny Day was one of the first bands tagged with the now-ubiquitous "EMO" label; SDRE released five critically acclaimed albums that developed legions of passionate followers ("Diary" remains Sub Pop Records' No. 2 all-time seller, behind Nirvana's "Bleach"). Seminal rock band Sunny Day Real Estate's 1994 debut, "Diary," was just becoming established in the independent rock underground when SDRE abruptly disbanded. The group got back together four years later to release the triumphant "How It Feels To Be Something On," one of the best comeback albums of the last decade. The 2000 album "The Rising Tide" marked SDRE's jump from longtime home Sub Pop to the Arista-affiliated Time Bomb, but the band broke up again shortly thereafter. Three of the four principal members of SDRE (only guitarist Dan Hoerner is absent) have reformed to record an album and tour as The Fire Theft. Moreover, while SDRE's legacy certainly will help, The Fire Theft is a new creation concerned with embracing the future than with any unfinished business.
