A hugely successful album for Blur, on its release 'The Great Escape' outsold the rest of the top 10 albums put together. The album also spawned four hit singles, including 'Country House', which would become the song that won the 'Britpop battle' against Oasis's 'Roll With It'. Lyrically, almost all of the songs are linked by a theme of loneliness and detachment, which contrasts with the usually upbeat nature of the music. The hits 'Country House', 'Charmless Man' and 'The Universal' are all included.
