Before she landed a contract with EMI, cellist Jacqueline du Pré made a few recordings for the BBC. Or, more properly put, she made a few broadcasts for the BBC which, after she landed her EMI contract, became recordings. The du Pré of the EMI recordings was a powerful and expressive player who gave everything she had to the music she performed. The du Pré of the BBC recordings was a no less powerful and perhaps even more expressive player who gave everything she had and then some to the music she performed. Sometimes, as in the Brahms and Falla works on these discs, the results are inspired and convincing performances. Sometimes, however, as in the Bach, Couperin, and Handel works, the results sound mannered and even excessive. The intensity of du Pré's commitment to Bach's Suite in D minor cannot be denied, but her overly interpreted performance is less about the music and more about the musician. While anyone who loves du Pré's playing will have to hear these discs, those listeners who are not already familiar with her playing may want to try her later EMI recordings instead. EMI's remastering of the BBC's originals is close and warm, but a bit dry. ~ James Leonard, AMG
