Description:
Seattle's long serving Grunge Godfathers and pre- Nirvana sludge rock icons THE MELVINS, have unleashed with a seething ear melter that could only be their next bonafide masterpiece, HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER. The now residents of Hollywood, The Melvins are far from glamming it up, 18 years and 16 bone jarring albums down the track. Hard, dark and utterly addictive, they revel in what could be called their finest, most un-Hollywood hyperbole hour: an 8 track scorching, melody thick pit of explosive supremo alt. metal. Whipping through your head at a schizophrenic breakneck/ droney, trance inducing speed and shooting 10 pound nails straight at your gut, this is sincerely a hostile ambient takeover of the most pleasurable aural kind. As grinding and demented as they have ever been, the trio have settled into their most stable and what they refer to as "classic" line up yet. Original members King Buzzo (guitar/vocals and Fantomas member) and Dale Crover (drums/percussion) have been aided and abetted for the past four years by ex- Cows bassist Kevin Rutmanis (also of Mike Paton's Tomahawk) who adds screams and slide bass as well as the classic four string duties. The Melvins proclaim this lineup the definitive whatever you want to call it of whatever it is they think they do. Nothing should be denied them now. As always, think the jagged guitar stylings of Black Flag and slimey heaviness of Black Sabbath, throw in some even further left of centre skullduggery and you've got the most crunching and confronting album of the millenium thus far. Hand your ears over now and go Melvins!
