Description:
The trouble with big events is that there is almost no way they can live up to the hype that surrounds them. One happy exception was the concert Luciano Pavarotti gave before several hundred thousand fans in New York's Central Park on the evening of June 26, 1993. The program is intelligently chosen and well-paced. Pavarotti's voice emerges gradually in the opening "Quando le sere al placido" from Verdi's 'Luisa Miller' before really stretching out, then shifting effortlessly into a group of popular songs before going back to opera for the big closing sequence, concluding with "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's 'Turandot.' Most importantly, the voice itself was in great form that night, sounding wonderfully powerful, accurate, and fresh at the age of 58. The engineers for this recording even managed to get a nice rich sound out of the New York Philharmonic, no mean feat for an outdoor concert.
