Stranger Than Paradise

The film that launched Jarmusch's career, Stranger Than Paradise follows the adventures of Willie (John Lurie) and his best friend Eddie (Richard Edson)-a couple of small time gamblers disenchanted with their lives. After a visit from his pretty Hungarian cousin, Eva (Eszter Balint), Willie at first rejects this unwanted intrusion into his life. However, after an unexpectedly large poker win, the trio sets off on an unforgettable road trip through the wastelands of Cleveland to the sunshine and blue skies of Florida and from misfortune, to fortune and back.

Night on Earth

In one night, across the world, five taxi drivers experience five very different rides. In LA, a flustered agent recognises star quality in her driver, while New York in all its glory defeats a new American. A Parisian taxi driver learns the real meaning of discrimination, and a rollicking ride through Rome has repercussions for the clergy. And finally a trio of drunken Finns make a typically humourous end to their night.

Too laid-back to avoid a prison term for a murder he did not commit, Zack (Tom Waits), finds himself sharing a jail cell with a small-time pimp (John Lurie) and an effervescent Italian (Roberto Benigni) arrested for killing a man while playing cards. An eventual escape leads the eccentric trio into the depths of the Louisiana bayou with no salvation in sight. It isn't until they land at the small home of an Italian immigrant (Nicoletta Braschi) that Zack, Jack, and Roberto learn to appreciate the beauty the world has to offer. The enchanting chemistry of the lead actors combine with Robby M¨¹ller's gorgeous black-and-white photography to create one of the most charming films to come out of America in decades.
