Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett were on the verge of becoming superstars when they came together for the first of their concert evenings at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 1962. Andrews was already a Broadway legend, performing in The Boyfriend, My Fair Lady and Camelot, though she was not yet a household name. Burnett had yet to make the leap to her own acclaimed primetime show but was grabbing attention for her hilarious bits on CBS's The Garry Moore Show and on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress. The stars rehearsed for two weeks before the taping of the show and were surrounded by many other talented people who went on to make a name for themselves including director Joe Hamilton (whom Burnett married a year later), writer Mike Nichols and music director Irwin Kostal, who would conduct the score of Andrews' Oscar®-winning film debut Mary Poppins and win an Oscar® himself for The Sound of Music. The audience loved the show and the album, earning Burnett a second Emmy® Award for her performance.
