Description:
This disc received the 1997 Gramophone award for "Best Contemporary Recording." It was also nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without Orchestra)."
Volume Three of Sony's Ligeti Edition is devoted to the two books of 'Etudes pour piano' along with the early 'Musica ricercata.' There are correspondences with the great cycles of Chopin and Debussy. It says much that Ligeti's works can be mentioned in such exalted company. Ligeti devotes each etude to a specific rhythmic or other technical concern. As his music has evolved, the range of influences absorbed has reached ever wider. A new influence is the studies for player piano of Nancarrow, particularly in the area of rhythmic complexities, as well as African music and the jazz of Thelonious Monk. To this end, some of the etudes were originally conceived for player piano and may be heard in that form in Volume Five. The beginning of the third book, since added to, is included here and shows Ligeti striving to construct diatonic music that is nevertheless not tonal. The performances of Pierre-Laurent Aimard are of breathtaking virtuosity.
The early 'Musica ricercata' is an experiment in construction where an additional note is added to each subsequent piece until the full series is reached. It is also the basis for the Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet.
