Description:
This 1995 release brings together Clannad's ambient sound with their Celtic roots and pop sensibility. "Seanchas", the second track, probably evinces this best. A song about Irish folk lore sung entirely in Irish, this song is replete with the slick drumming of L.A. studio guru Vinny Colaiuta and Mel Collins' "smooth jazz" saxophone stylings. Moreover, Maire Brennan's distant vocals reverberate on this track, adding a sheen of mystique to the music.
Other songs such as "A Bridge (That Carries Us Over)" and "From Your Heart" follow suit quite similarly, with the exception of the English lyrics. In general, this album is somber and reflective, with touches of Celtic mysticism and eerie musical backdrops woven throughout all ten tracks. Perhaps the most poignant song on LORE is "Broken Pieces", a sorrowful tune about love's impermanence. Supported impeccably by subtle keyboard chords, Maire Brennan's harp playing, and Colaiuta's sparse drumming, this song stands as one of Clannad's most resonant.
