Chicago-born Johnny Griffin earned his reputation as "the world's fastest tenor player" with his limber, fluid, surging style. After playing in the 1950s bands of bop legends Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk (and co-leading a combo with fellow tenor Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis), Griffin relocated to Europe in the '60s, becoming a jazz star on the continental scene.
