ME MYSELF I is an all-electric rock and roll album with a glossy sheen. However, the grace and depth of the West Indian-born singer-songwriter's tunes not only survive the change in production style, they thrive in the more exciting surroundings. Backed with an all-star band featuring Will Lee, Anton Fig and Hiram Bullock of David Letterman's house band and guests including the E Street Band keyboardist Danny Federici and saxophonist Clarence Clemons, Armatrading sings with a newfound spunk and assertion. The ultra-melodic title track, featuring a stellar Chris Spedding guitar solo, is a potent declaration of self-reliance, and that independent spirit continues through the rest of this solid album.
