This narrative poem explores the later years of fictional former diva Gloria Silver and the pain and self-reflection that accompany an attempted comeback. The poetry is spare but richly metaphoric and endowed with a sense of immediacy as the voice and world of Gloria Silver in all her feisty sensuality is created. This work also serves as an evocative and imaginative homage to the African American jazz world of the 1940s and '50s. Through Gloria's journey of memory--through sexual abuse as a child, the glorious rush of performance and the anticlimax of ordinary living, her intense sexual relationships with both women and men, and the despair of drug abuse--an unforgettable character emerges. Also reflected upon is the nature of performance, the communion between singer and listeners, and the sometimes ironic distance between the singer and the song.
