Pearl Jam's fourth album, No Code, is a startling change of direction for a band that will be forever associated with its grunge heritage. It is by far the most musically diverse of the band's recorded output. While a handful of tracks adhere to the established Pearl Jam sound, the rest of it veers off into largely uncharted territority. The album introduces Jack Irons (The Red Hot Chilli Peppers) on drums, and for the first time features a track with someone other than Vedder doing lead vocals. This time it's guitarist Stone Gossard singing "Mankind", a song he penned himself. Recorded in Chicago, Atlanta & Seattle, the album was Produced by Brendan O'Brien & Pearl Jam. No Code is an album where discordancy, rage and frustration are left outside the studio door, and is a beautiful coming of age album for a band who will be making albums for many years to come yet.
