A party with a long history: follow the clues hidden in the Ibiza compilation "Flower Power" and you'll quickly find yourself catapulted into the early days of the legendary club Pacha, which these days is practically an institution. Pan back to the late 60s: while flower children gathered on the West Coast of America, dictator Franco ruled Spain with an iron fist, and Beat, Folk and Psychedelic Rock ruled the dance floor. Disco was to be born only a decade later. There's no mistaking that "Flower Power" gets to the roots of the world's oldest club night, one that is still alive and kicking. For the summer season 2010, the traditional Sunday events unique, colourful happenings with extravagant decor have been switched to Tuesdays. Seven times this year Pacha will present the sound of another era, embedded in a contemporary nightlife setting. "But there's nothing nostalgic about it" DJ Piti insists. "It's never too heavy-handed, never too cheesy. We have our own standards of quality." Together with his brother Ricardo, Piti Urgell opened the first Pacha in 1967 in Sitges, a bathing resort on the Costa Brava, about 40 km south of Barcelona. It's hard to say exactly when the first "Flower Power" nights took place. After all, the Mediterranean was swarming back then with original hippies and dedicated dropouts in painted VW-buses, all in search of an alternative lifestyle. "In Sitges at the time, it was simply a case of creating a central meeting place for music and for a particular attitude to life in general", says Piti. "It was a totally unspectacular club yet we often had bother enough from the local authorities. They wanted to close us down once, for the simple reason that it was too dark inside to read books!" The Pacha and its various offshoots on the mainland became an established brand with worldwide fame. New concepts and spectacular megaclubs have spread since all over the island, yet the Pacha still maintains its role as a sort of primordial mother of Balearic Beats. And the "Flower Power" nights still keep that spirit alive. "These parties are something totally different: a happy and fairly innocent affair", Piti told a local paper, the Diario de Ibiza. "It's definitely the only club on Ibiza that doesn't have a straight bass drum. There's none of that boom-boom-boom. People always come in spectacular outfits. For me, they really are 'little angels'. I can understand that music nowadays has to raise the pressure, because society has become a lot more impatient and can no longer dance to more laid-back rhythms. For this compilation DJ Piti selected 40 songs from among his impressive arsenal of vinyl, which conjure the "Flower Power" spirit better than anything else around from The Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man", the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it Be Nice", Simon & Garfunkels' "Mrs Robinson" to The Animals' " Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood ". These are great classics and the unique Pacha ambiance breathes new life into them. "Flower Power" thus pays homage to a unique party concept. And, by the way, it gives you a pretty good idea of what else is possible, beyond the Electro sounds of today's club cosmos.
