Description:
The Pretty Things' debut was one of the prime cuts of early British R&B, featuring such definitively raunchy exponents of the genre as "Roadrunner," "Big City," "Pretty Thing," and "Honey I Need." A couple of weak jams prevented the album from ranking as a true classic. The American version differed slightly from the U.K. version of the record, which took off four tracks and substituted four others. The 1998 CD reissue on Snapper, however (issued in both the U.S. and U.K.), is the definitive edition of the album, as it includes all of the tracks from both the American and British versions of the LP, as well as "Big Boss Man" (the B-side of their first single), and the outtake "Get Yourself Home," which was not released in the 1960s. A couple of tracks that originally only appeared on the 1965 U.K. version of the album ("Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut," "She's Fine, She's Mine") are particularly essential to rounding out the picture of the band as they sounded at their outset, so the Snapper CD is now the configuration to get. (Half of the songs from that CD are on the Get a Buzz compilation.) ~ Richie Unterberger, AMG
