When Andre Previn was appointed Music Director of the London Symphony in the late 1960s, it came as something of a surprise, for while he had a reputation as a film composer and jazz pianist, he was not thought of as a serious classical music conductor. But it was a perfect match. The cool, long-haired European refugee-by-way-of-Hollywood found a home in mod London and made some great music with the LSO, which happened to be entering one of its peak periods. One of their signature pieces was the Rachmaninov Second Symphony, which they took on tour and recorded twice.
This EMI recording from 1973 was one of the first to be made of the complete, uncut symphony and it still stands as one of the most passionately invigorating accounts available. It is clear from the carefully shaped phrasing of the opening measures how involved the music making is. By not playing it straight but making it sound completely natural, they show that they know this music inside out, yet are able to give it a freshness of discovery that draws the listener in. And the strings! They are really the main characters in this drama, only ceding center stage to the clarinet for a few minutes of the adagio. The London players blaze and sing with complete abandon, creating a kind of ecstatic energy that only rarely gets captured by the microphone.
