Excerpt: For some time the ' poor fellow-soldiers of Chbist Jesus ' adhered to their first aim and object. They simply protected the poor pilgrims on their journey backward and forward between the sea-coast and Jerusalem, and cleared the road of all who threatened to molest them. But after a time when their community became more known, and many hundred valiant men joined them, they determined no longer to confine their efforts to the defence of the pilgrims, but to take the whole Christian kingdom of Jerusalem under their protection, making the defence of the Eastern Church and of all its holy places, part of their particular profession. Then it was, in the year 1118, that Baldwin the second Christian king of Jerusalem, in reward for the good and acceptable service they had rendered to Christendom gave them for a place of habitation, the temple of Solomon on Mount Moriah; for till that time they had had no church, and no particular place of abode, although nineteen years had passed since Jerusalem had been conquered by the crusaders. It was from this Temple, James of Vitry tells us, that the 'poor fellow-soldiers of Chiust Jesus, ' derived their name, and were henceforth called ' Knights Templars' or ' Knights of the Temple.'
