Description:
Often compared to their kindred spirits the Butthole Surfers, the six-piece, three-guitar Alice Donut play a hard-hitting brand of downtown New York City art-rock. But what sets Donut apart from the army of other downtown acts is their wicked humor and confidently radical disposition. It was this radicalism, along with their famously wild and energetic live shows, that caught the eye of the Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra, who signed the band after their third gig. (Donut's singer, Tom Antona, perhaps not so coincidentally, has a voice reminiscent of Biafra's.) Recorded in 1990, REVENGE FANTASIES OF THE IMPOTENT features a broad pallet of songs. "Come Up With Your Hands Out" is a mordantly funny murder ballad, delivered in spoken word vocal style by Antona. Much of REVENGE FANTASIES OF THE IMPOTENT is a sonically underground affair. But the driving "Sleep," and "Naked, Sharp & Perfect" show a KISS-like pop sensibility. Meanwhile the band's instrumental version of the Black Sabbath classic, "War Pigs," complete with a twisted horn arrangement played by drummer Steve Moses, displays a band with serious misgivings about the conformist world around them, who aren't afraid to make fun of it, either.
