Description:
1977's SHOW SOME EMOTION builds on the fresh start of Joan Armatrading's self-titled third album from the year before, where the West Indian-born singer-songwriter had stripped back the tentative experiments of her first two albums and returned to her mostly-acoustic folk roots. This album has the same intimacy as its predecessor, but with a bit more oomph. John "Rabbit" Bundrick and the great Georgie Fame frame the songs in old-fashioned Hammond organ grooves, and Mel Collins' saxophone also provides a soulful element. Armatrading's languid, dusky delivery of songs like the title track and "Woncha Come On Home" shows how much her emotional range developed in the five years since her debut. SHOW SOME EMOTION is a gem of '70s singer-songwriter pop.
