Description:
The Thompson Twins were among the most underrated bands of the '80s. The group's jubilant embrace of new wave, African rhythms, and Middle Eastern music somehow didn't get the widespread critical praise it deserved. Perhaps the band was too pop to be taken seriously. Singles Collection doesn't change how the group is looked upon in the history books. The Thompson Twins recorded glossy, hook-laden dance tunes, and Singles Collection is a reminder of how brilliant they were at it. "Hold Me Now" became an '80s prom staple and one of the decade's beloved records. Featuring a moving vocal from Tom Bailey, it's probably the least-dated track on this compilation. Remixes of "Lies" and "Lay Your Hands on Me" make those songs sound fresh again after the overexposure their shorter versions received on '80s flashback radio shows and cable channels. Singles Collection shouldn't be seen as a best-of CD; after all, "If You Were Here," a moody gem lovingly used in Sixteen Candles, is absent, and no retrospective of the Thompson Twins' career highlights would be complete without it. Singles Collection is the band's greatest hits presented in extended takes that will remind listeners of when new wave was still new.
