A whole generation of young firebrands that was raised on 1990s post-hardcore is now all grown up and making its own racket. New Jersey's Armor for Sleep continues the state's tradition of dynamic, melodic, and--yes--emotional music that mixes hardcore heaviness with slick pop songcraft and arena bombast. One hears echoes of underground legends like Quicksand blending with the more populist sounds of Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters on SMILE FOR THEM. Armor for Sleep have their rock moves down to a science, and as the choruses swoop and crescendo with layers of guitar slathered over urgent, accessible vocals, it's radio rock made in a way that very few young bands remember how to do. File under modern "emo," but leave preconceived notions at home.
