Description:
Solo Hip-Hop artist Ivens (David Coen) is somewhat of an enigma. A reclusive cigarette smoking, horror movie watching twenty three year old rapper with a penchant for the strange, esoteric and the slightly left of center, both in music and his day-to-day life. Ivens debut solo album entitled 'Sounds To Expire To' is a cryptic, apocalyptic, black, angst ridden and at times humorous, 'all too real' depiction of a life in these uncertain times. An explosion of sound, layered sonic textures and vivid imagery that forms one of the most significant Australian hip-hop releases of 2007. Although initially a fan of Hip-Hop, Ivens exposure to Punk and Hardcore influences also resonate throughout "Sounds To Expire To". Whether it is his DIY attitude or his constant questioning of the world and society, it's that basic punk ethic that surfaces as an important part of Ivens personality. It's also something that becomes very apparent when listening to his debut LP. Produced entirely by acclaimed Obese Records artist Plutonic lab, this result of over a year's work, features a stellar line up of guests including Australian DMC champ 2006 DJ Perplex, DJ Murder 1 (Def Wish Cast), Fame, 13th Son, Brass (Celsius), Nick Sweepah and Hardcore vocalist Joel White (Hit List). "Sounds To Expire To" is set to drop on August 11 on Ivens own newly formed label Eco.Tone and is proudly distributed by Obese Records. Born and raised in Melbourne, this founding member of Awakenings Crew has been honing his skills as a lyricist and MC on stage and in the studio for some years now. To date Ivens has shared the stage with quite a few notable artists including Time Machine (USA), Boom Bip (USA), Saul Williams (USA) and popular local acts such as Macromantics, Curse Ov Dialect, Grey Daturas, Mountains In The Sky and a regular guest with friend's Muph & Plutonic, with whom he has also recorded with.
