Although Judd & Maggie's SUBJECTS features drummer Joey Waronker and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, both formerly of Beck's backing band, there's no alt-rock genre-hopping on this debut. Produced by Waronker, the 2005 album is a 12-song set of light, melodic pop that's marked by the Baltimore brother/sister duo's bright harmonies. While Maggie often takes up lead vocals, Judd capably complements her singing, and contributes either guitar or piano to most tracks. Maggie's voice can take on a gauzy likeness to Dido or Sarah McLachlan (see "Sleeper" and the quiet interlude of "Closer"), but in general, she sticks to a more straightforward approach that syncs up wonderfully with the disc's sensitive pop songs. Waronker's production work is crisp and clear, with Patrick Warren's occasional horn and string arrangements filling out the slow, swaying "Big Lights" and the delicate, emotional "Sponge," respectively. Like a 21st-century version of the Carpenters, Judd & Maggie know how to turn a rapport between siblings into compelling music, as revealed on SUBJECTS.
