Description:
Despite past rumours to the contrary, rock ?n?roll is not dead. But if any band was to fly a modern day flag for the archetypal term that sums up appearance, attitude and banging guitars, then this is the one. In true uncompromising fashion, they broach issues. Politics, drugs, guns, dejection, and even a spot of lurve into the bargain. Lyrics that are not so convoluted to be contrived, nor simplistic as to not care. A real bite to the cacophony of sound from a trio that lives, breathes and spits music.

'Take Them On? has the feel of a blistering debut, not the often touted ?difficult second album?that it is. Their eponymous first CD from two years ago was a moody, smoke filled basement of psychedelia. Impressive, but more glum grower than instant karma. What was unspoken attitude last time, gets the full vocal two fingers worth now. It?s ?A href="http://www.cd-wow.com/detail_results.php?product_code=244">Definitely Maybe? not ?A href="http://www.cd-wow.com/detail_results.php?product_code=246">What?s the Story? Big sounds from track one, but a depth of endurance throughout that comes with repeated plays.

It kicks in from the first electric twang. An instant T-Rex style guitar hook with an obvious protest attached: ?we don?t like you / we just want to try you? There?s equally fine immediacy with the ?Six Barrel Shotgun? You know, the old murder and suicide pact conundrum. ?In Like The Rose?may take a couple of times to blossom, but the early Garbage-esque grunge really blooms. ?Ha Ha High Babe?is instrumental, bar a single well repeated line, and is pretty basic, but loads of distorted bass somehow makes it sloppily gorgeous.

?Rise And Fall?then ?Going Under?are perfunctory (if excellent) rock fodder. Then there?s pure rock on ?Generation? and a return to moody darkness on ?Shade Of Blue? Strong banged up rantings on the distinctly anti ?US Government? but balanced by the simply strum love and death reflecting ?And I?m Aching? A perfect contrast.

However if you want a highlights, then they come near the end. ?Suddenly?is pretty damn close to perfection. A fantastic smoke drenched opus that has anthems worthy of a Bond flick. Something akin to their debut, but bigger, stronger, better. Or the outstanding explosive final track. A massive wall of sound bash that exorcises all demons that have passed before. Though with the thrice repeated and desperately pleading ?Save Me?as closing lines, you just wonder if those demons have gone for good.

Yes the BRMC are anti-establishment in the finest tradition, but the dark San Francisco collective is much more than simple attitude, and so much brighter than the formula corporate rock that usually fills the US charts. Their burgeoning outlook (and leather clad appearance) justifies their moniker completely ?which came from the Marlon Brando flick ?The Wild One?of course. Loud and gritty sounds of disturbing honesty that simply sound brilliant. Not just a torch song or two.
