A founding member, with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, of the seminal Wailers, Peter Tosh began his musical career while still in his teens, recording with legendary Jamaican musical outfits like the Skatalites and Upsetters. This collection of early recordings from 1963-1966 documents the beginnings of an important artist while also charting the origins of reggae itself.
The first 13 songs here, from Tosh's work for the Studio One label with producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd, feature a rustic sound and off-kilter, percolating rhythms that transport listeners to a bygone era. Tosh was not yet the confident growler that he became, but there are touches of his familiar vocal style on the boastful title track, his first recorded vocal. His cover version of Smokey Robinson's "Don't Look Back," later a duet with Mick Jagger, is sheer delight. The final six songs, produced by studio innovator Lee "Scratch" Perry, show exactly where the music was headed. "Rightful Ruler" sounds radically experimental and plain way-out next to the earlier tracks, while the languid, groovy "Secondhand" is classic roots reggae. The Perry tracks show Tosh's development as a singer, with his trademark gruff vocal style increasingly in evidence.
