UBIQUITY marked a turning point for Roy Ayers in 1971. While the album maintains a fair degree of the post-bop rigor found on early efforts by the vibraphonist, UBIQUITY finds him ranging further into deep funk, R&B, and commercial pop territories. Vocals play an increasingly larger part on the songs, and covers like "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" suggest that Ayers was targeting a crossover market. Jazz purists may turn their noses up at such changes, yet it's hard to argue the appeal of both mellow groovers like "Hummin'" and high-energy workouts like "The Fuzz." Ayers was a pioneer in mixing advanced jazz elements with pop, funk, and rock, and UBIQUITY is one of his most memorable and distinctive calling cards.
