Description:
This is Avarus' second album to be co-released by Lal Lal Lal and the American label Secret Eye, and it is significantly better than the previous one, Jättiläisrotta. Why? First, it offers better cohesion: the longer tracks convey a stronger sense of direction within the band's jamming, something that was lost in the shorter edits on the previous CD. Second, third, and fourth: a more prominent rhythmic pulse, wilder electric guitar, and guest performer Tara Burke (aka Fursaxa) on half of the album. Recorded live in Dublin, April 2005, Vesikansi taps into the freak-out essence of the band: keyboard swooshes go nuts, small percussion instruments litter the floor and everyone has a go at them, but mostly, the group is working as a unit to build instant anthems with more of a rock edge than before. Don't be mistaken, they are not turning into an underground psychedelic rock outfit. The music remains resolutely in the free folk underground vein, but on this release, Avarus sound closer to Jackie-O Motherfucker than to the No-Neck Blues Band. The sound is not spectacular, but decent enough to appreciate the unbridled creativity of the musicians, and Burke's presence on the two-part, half-hour-long "Vissyvesi" is a nice treat. This is not the album of the year, even within its genre, but a titillating item for the connoisseur. ~ François Couture, AMG
