Like Easy Tempo, Vol. 6, this seventh volume in the series narrows its stylistic focus. However, this time the focus is a type of song instead of musical genre: this disc is subtitled "the bikini beat," and focuses on the kind of dance-friendly instrumentals that could have been used in the kind of "swinging nightclub" scenes that often popped up in the 1960s and 1970s European films this series draws its music from. As a result, Easy Tempo, Vol. 7 sports a nice overall consistency while still managing to offer dish up the stylistic shifts that make the rest of this compilation series so much fun. As one might expect, this set has a very uptempo, rhythmic feel to it, and this tone is firmly set by the opening cut, Gian Piero Reverberi's "Malizie Di Venere": this tight instrumental layers a snazzy, wordless female vocal and an airy string arrangement over a frenetic rhythm section that pairs a thumb-popping bassline with crisp drum work. Other memorable cuts on this volume include Bruno Nicolai's "Spy Chase," which the energetic scat vocals of a chorus to a throbbing jazz beat, and Piero Piccioni's "Ti Ho Sporato Per Allegria," a percussive cut that draws its melody from the kind of heavily-reverbed electric guitar leads one would expect on a spaghetti western soundtrack. The remainder of the cuts continue in the same fashion, dabbling in everything from light Latin jazz to heavy acid rock while maintaining a peppy, dance-friendly sense of rhythm throughout. Although it doesn't offer any real surprises due to its deliberate stylistic limitations, Easy Tempo, Vol. 7 dishes up more than enough likable grooves to make it worthwhile listen for fans of European lounge.
