Before AMERICAN IDIOT redefined what a pop punk band was capable of, Chicago's Screeching Weasel ruled the roost. Playing three-minute, happy-go-punky blasts wholly indebted to the Ramones, Screeching Weasel gave voice to rock's most loyal audience: the disaffected teen. Unlike Green Day, Screeching Weasel kept their politics personal, examining America's teenage wasteland through the lens of pop culture ("Peter Brady," "Joanie Loves Johnny," and "Planet of the Apes"). And when they did tackle serious social issues it was with wry humor and irony ("I Wanna Be a Homosexual"). As this 34-track career retrospective--spanning three labels and 12 albums--makes amply clear, Screeching Weasel never reinvented the wheel. But who cares? As long as there are irritated kids out there acting dumb and having fun, there's no need to.
